Thousands of spectators lined the streets of Bridgwater, Somerset, for the 2026 illuminated carnival procession, a dazzling display of creativity and community spirit. The event, held annually, featured elaborate carts designed by local clubs that spend the entire year preparing for the spectacle.

A Year in the Making

Dan Prosser, a member of the Renegades Carnival Club, described the preparations as "more like a lifestyle than just a hobby," adding that his non-carnival friends think his dedication is "absolutely nuts." The carts, which are judged on presentation, routine or comic content, lighting, costume and make-up, and cart construction, showcased themes ranging from rock shows to a tribute to Del Boy and his three-wheeler from Only Fools and Horses, and even a circus big top.

Volunteer-run carnival clubs across the region invest countless hours in building these illuminated creations, which are designed around specific themes with synchronized lighting, costumes, movement, and accompanying soundtracks. Performers in elaborate costumes brought each theme to life, captivating the crowds as the carts weaved through the streets.

A Fiery Finale

The carnival concluded with the traditional squibbing ceremony, where 210 participants, including local MP Sir Ashley Fox, lit large fireworks strapped to solid blocks of wood on the ends of poles. The spectacular display left the audience in awe, marking a dramatic end to the evening's festivities.

The event not only highlights the artistic talent and commitment of the local community but also serves as a major cultural attraction, drawing visitors from across the region. For many, the Bridgwater Carnival is a cherished tradition that showcases the best of Somerset's creative spirit.

As the lights dimmed on another successful year, the carnival clubs are already looking ahead to 2027, ready to begin work on their next masterpieces. The Bridgwater Carnival continues to be a testament to the power of community and the joy of shared celebration.
