An off-court conversation between Jessica Pegula and her coach has thrust the world of women's tennis into an unexpected controversy after a courtside microphone captured the American describing Mirra Andreeva as "a diva" who "needs to be humbled."
The remarks came during a practice session at Indian Wells, California, that the Women's Tennis Association had been live streaming ahead of the season-ending WTA Finals, which begin on Sunday. Pegula and coach Mark Knowles stayed on court after the session concluded, and their private exchange was picked up by the microphone.
What Was Said
In the audio, the 32-year-old Pegula, currently ranked fifth in the world, can be heard voicing frustration with the behaviour of the teenage French Open champion and her coach, Conchita Martinez. The five-time Grand Slam singles champion from Spain has guided Andreeva since April 2024.
Pegula suggested that Martinez encourages the young Russian's conduct, saying the Spaniard "pokes her and eggs on her behaviour." Knowles replied that Andreeva needs someone to "put her in her place," adding that once that happens, she will be "really good."
The conversation also included some expletives from Pegula. YouTube streams of the practice sessions have since been taken down by the WTA, though clips continue to circulate widely on social media.
Praise Mixed With Criticism
Not all of the commentary was negative. Pegula, a member of the WTA players' council, was effusive about Andreeva's abilities on court, calling the world number three "wonderful" and "smart."
"She moves like a cat," Pegula said. "She's got the perfect serve. She's smart. She anticipates well."
The American then drew a comparison with compatriot Coco Gauff, who was also 19 when she captured her first major title. Now 22, Gauff has two Grand Slams to her name.
"It's so funny how you see her and then you see Coco's mentality," Pegula said. "If she had Coco's mentality, she'd be better than her."
A Separate Flashpoint
The leaked audio was not the only awkward moment caught on camera at Indian Wells. World number one Elena Rybakina appeared to have a tense exchange with her coach, Stefano Vukov, before a practice session with Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova.
In footage that was also live streamed, Rybakina seems to remonstrate with Vukov as they walk toward the net, saying: "Stay here. I'm talking to you. Can you stand here?" The pair exchanged a few more words, which were inaudible, before crossing the court together to greet Noskova and her team.
Vukov was suspended by the WTA in February 2025 following an independent investigation into his conduct toward the Kazakhstani star. He rejoined her team that August.
Privacy Concerns Resurface
The incident has reignited a debate about the level of access granted to broadcasters at major tournaments. Pegula herself was among the players who objected to additional behind-the-scenes cameras at the Australian Open in January, describing the filming as an "invasion of privacy" that needed to be "cut back."
"You just feel like you're under a microscope constantly," she said at the time.
Pegula and Andreeva have been drawn into different groups at the WTA Finals, meaning they could only meet in the semi-finals or the final. Pegula's group includes Gauff, Rybakina and Noskova. The tournament, being staged at Indian Wells for the first time, runs until 15 November.
Representatives for Pegula and the WTA have been approached for comment.
