Sport-S enjoyed a flawless double-header in the Uganda Volleyball League on Friday, with both their men's and women's teams securing victories at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium. The women's team delivered a stunning 3-0 upset against defending champions KCCA, while the men's side overcame Uganda Christian University (UCU) 3-1 to maintain their perfect start to the season.
Women's team ends KCCA's unbeaten run
The women's match was a test of resilience and strategy. Despite KCCA's strong serving and reception in the early stages, Sport-S remained composed. "We knew KCCA is a team we needed to be conscious of," said Akiteng, a key player for Sport-S. "We targeted to be good both offensively and defensively playing against the defending champions. They are so good, but we managed to win the game."
Sport-S had to dig deep after trailing 6-10 in the first set, but they fought back to lead 13-10 and eventually took the set 25-20. The second set was tightly contested, with the teams level at 13-13, but Sport-S pulled away to win 25-18. KCCA attempted a comeback in the third set, but Sport-S held firm to clinch it 25-19 and complete a straight-set victory.
"The first set we chased, and in the second set they had a good service we failed to receive, but then we had to recompose ourselves," Akiteng added. "And then we managed to pass, and eventually we went aggressive on them. We struggled with our serving during our first game. We worked on that problem, we need to maintain this form."
The win marks Sport-S's second consecutive victory, following their 3-1 triumph over KCB-Nkumba. It also ends KCCA's unbeaten start to the season, which had seen them defeat Vision Volleyball Club and UCU with identical 3-0 scorelines.
Men's team extends winning streak
In the men's fixture, Sport-S continued their impressive form with a 3-1 win over UCU. They dominated the first set 25-12, but UCU responded with a 25-21 win in the second. Sport-S regained control in the third set, winning 25-20, and sealed the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth. The men's team had previously defeated Elyon 3-0 in their opening match.
Akiteng emphasized that the team will continue to build on their attacking strength as the league progresses. "We need to maintain this form," she said. With both teams performing well, Sport-S looks set to be a force to reckon with in this season's Uganda Volleyball League.
The double victory not only boosts Sport-S's morale but also sends a strong message to their rivals. As the league unfolds, all eyes will be on Sport-S to see if they can sustain their winning momentum.
