Police in Aberdeen are searching for a 22-year-old man who fraudulently gained access to hospital wards and patient files by posing as a medical student. Stephen Simpson failed to appear at Aberdeen Sheriff Court for sentencing on Tuesday, prompting Sheriff William Summers to issue an arrest warrant.
Simpson had previously admitted to the fraud, which took place at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) between 9 December 2023 and 26 January 2024. During that period, he wore medical scrubs, NHS-branded clothing, a stethoscope, and a pager to blend in with hospital staff.
How the Deception Unfolded
According to court proceedings, Simpson misled hospital employees into believing he was a medical student authorized to be in the hospital. This allowed him to remain on the premises, access restricted areas, and view medical files, staff-only zones, and wards.
He also admitted to stealing items including NHS-branded clothing, a pager, and perfume. Originally, Simpson faced six charges: one of fraud and five of theft. Last month, he pleaded guilty to two amended charges.
Defence and Previous Absences
Defence solicitor Laura Gracie informed the court that she had been in contact with Simpson, but he did not attend. This is not the first time he has missed a court date; last week, he also failed to appear for sentencing, citing a migraine. The sentencing had already been deferred on that occasion.
Sheriff Summers granted the warrant for Simpson's arrest, and police are now actively seeking him.
Hospital Security Under Scrutiny
The case has raised concerns about security protocols at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. How Simpson managed to move freely through restricted areas for several weeks without detection remains a key question. NHS Grampian has not yet commented on the incident.
The incident highlights the importance of robust identification and access control measures in healthcare settings, where patient confidentiality and safety are paramount.
As the search for Simpson continues, authorities are urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact Police Scotland.
