A car crash in Liverpool city centre on Wednesday caused a gas leak, prompting evacuations of nearby buildings and road closures, authorities said.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 GMT when a Peugeot vehicle collided with the window of Tiger Rock Restaurant on North John Street, according to Merseyside Police. The driver remained at the scene, and investigators have stated there is no indication that the crash was intentional.
Three individuals who were inside the restaurant at the time were assessed for minor injuries by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. Their conditions were not serious, and they did not require hospital treatment.
The impact of the collision damaged a gas line, leading to a leak. Firefighters and police established a cordon around the area as a safety measure. A structural engineer and a gas engineer were called to the scene to assess the damage and address the leak.
As a precaution, neighboring buildings were evacuated. Road closures are in effect at the junction of Dale Street and North John Street, as well as at the junction of North John Street and Lord Street. These closures are expected to remain in place while repairs are carried out.
Bus services have also been affected. All Wirral Metro services are terminating at Whitechapel and starting their return journeys from Sir Thomas Street. Passengers are advised to check for updates and allow extra time for their travels.
The incident caused significant disruption in the busy city centre area, but authorities are working to resolve the situation swiftly. The police have urged the public to avoid the area if possible and to follow diversions.
This is a developing story. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
