Tianna Patterson, a 17-year-old student from Strabane, County Tyrone, has been hailed for her bravery after she rescued an unconscious teenage boy from a bonfire on Saturday night. The boy, also 17, had been knocked unconscious by a punch and fell into the flames, suffering severe burns to his face and hands.

In an interview, Tianna recounted the harrowing moment: "I just reached for him by the neck and pulled him out of the bonfire. I then got a friend's phone and called the emergency services." Her quick actions likely prevented a tragedy, according to her mother, Alex Patterson, who expressed immense pride in her daughter. "We are all very proud of her as this could so easily have been a terrible tragedy," she said. "But thankfully she acted quickly and rescued the young lad and got him help from the emergency services."

Community in Shock

Independent councillor Paul Gallagher, who has spoken with the injured boy's mother, described her as "distraught." He told BBC Radio Foyle's North West Today programme: "Young people have gone to the bonfire and in the chaos of it, a young 17-year-old got knocked unconscious, fell onto a fire which at best can be described as white hot. I've spoken to his mother who was very distraught, to say the least." Gallagher added that the boy will require extensive medical care and a long recovery period.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of bonfires, which Gallagher criticized as destructive and dangerous. "The chaos around a bonfire is madness and it should never have happened that a young boy gets knocked out and put on a fire," he said. "Bonfires bring very little benefit, they are destructive, they are a serious danger to young people."

Police Investigation Ongoing

Police are intensifying their search for the attacker and have appealed for witnesses, including anyone who may have recorded the assault on their mobile phones, to come forward. No arrests have been made so far.

Tianna, an A Level student at Holy Cross College in Strabane, was at the bonfire with friends when the incident occurred. Her instinctive response has earned her praise from the community and beyond. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on justice for the injured boy and ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
