Wananchi Hockey Club is celebrating a double triumph after both its men's and women's teams secured places in the Uganda Cup finals, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the national hockey season.

Men Edge Past Semifinal Test

The Wananchi men's side booked their ticket after a tense two-legged semifinal. Following a 4-4 stalemate in the opening encounter, the team returned with renewed determination and claimed a 3-2 victory in the second leg on Saturday. That result sealed a 7-6 aggregate win and kept their cup dreams alive.

Standing between Wananchi and the trophy is Rockets, a club with deep ties to the Wananchi setup. Rockets are chasing their first-ever Uganda Cup crown and arrive in the final brimming with confidence after a dominant semifinal display.

Rockets dismantled HC Originals with a staggering 9-1 aggregate scoreline. Their charge began with a commanding 5-0 win at Lugogo a week earlier, before they wrapped up the tie with a 4-1 triumph in the return leg on Sunday. Coach Martin Okello credited his players for their steady improvement, which has carried the club to its maiden final appearance.

Women Set Up All-Wananchi Final

The women's competition will deliver a family affair, with 2024 champions HDF set to face their parent club, Wananchi, in the final.

HDF produced a remarkable comeback to eliminate Kampala Swans, the reigning champions of 2023, 2024 and 2025. After losing the first leg 2-1, HDF rallied to win the return leg 3-2 at Lugogo on Sunday. With the tie level, a penalty shootout followed, and HDF held their nerve to prevail 4-3.

Wananchi, for their part, cruised into the final with a ruthless 14-1 aggregate victory over Weatherhead across the two semifinal legs, underlining their attacking strength.

Final Date Confirmed

Uganda Hockey Association assistant general secretary Joshua Masawi confirmed that the final will take place on December 13. The match was originally scheduled for November 29 but was pushed back because the playing ground was unavailable.

With both Wananchi sides in contention and Rockets hungry for a historic first title, the finals promise plenty of drama, local pride and high-stakes hockey.
