Aston Villa are on the verge of securing a new contract for head coach Unai Emery, which will grant him greater influence over the club's long-term development. The Spaniard, who has been at the helm since October 2022, held productive talks with the club's hierarchy on Wednesday to discuss the future, with all parties eager to extend his tenure at Villa Park.

Emery Embraces Bigger Role

Emery is reportedly enthusiastic about playing a more significant part in shaping the club's long-term strategy. Negotiations are ongoing regarding the finer points of the deal, including financial terms and duration. The plan is to make an official announcement once all details are finalized, though that is not expected before the weekend.

Since taking over, Emery has transformed Villa from relegation strugglers into a side that consistently qualifies for European football. Under his guidance, the club won the Europa League in May, marking their first major trophy in 30 years. Last month, Emery celebrated four years at the club, a period that has seen him linked with other high-profile roles, including a potential move to Manchester United should they part ways with current boss Michael Carrick.

Commitment Beyond 2029

Despite the speculation, Emery, who was already under contract until 2029, is now close to signing a new extended deal. On Wednesday night, Villa released a statement confirming that a meeting had taken place between Emery, chairman Nassef Sawiris, and executives Roberto Olabe and Damian Vidagany.

The statement read: "The discussions focused on jointly planning the club's long-term strategic direction, with positive discussions establishing a clear commitment beyond 2029 for the joint development of the club under the sporting leadership of Unai Emery based on the shared ambitions and common goal to reach excellency and keep growing during the next years."

It continued: "The objective is clear: to build an ambitious, competitive Aston Villa capable of taking on the biggest challenges and achievements."

Challenges and Achievements

Emery, who has previously managed Arsenal, Sevilla, and Paris Saint-Germain, joined Villa from Villarreal in 2022. After a summer of significant squad changes, with key players from the side that finished fourth in the Premier League and lifted European silverware departing, Villa currently sit 10th in the league but have won three of their four opening matches in the Champions League.

Last month, the club threatened legal action against pundit and former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher after he suggested Emery would be a suitable candidate for Manchester United and told Villa fans to "shut up." The threat was dropped after Carragher issued an apology.

As Emery looks to cement Villa's status among the elite, this new deal signals both the club's ambition and their faith in the Spanish tactician to lead them to even greater heights.
