The Ugandan government has pledged to resolve the shortage of official stamps for newly elected Local Council (LC) chairpersons by the end of November, following concerns raised by Members of Parliament about disruptions in village-level service delivery.
Government Commitment
David Bahati, the State Minister for Industry, represented the government during the 16th Sitting of the 2nd Meeting of the 1st Session of the 12th Parliament on Wednesday, November 4. He assured lawmakers that the matter would be addressed within the month.
"On behalf of Government, we want to commit that we are going to resolve this matter up to the end of November," Bahati told Parliament.
Background
The shortage of official stamps has hampered the ability of LC chairpersons to authenticate documents, a key part of their role in local administration. Without stamps, services such as certification of letters and official forms have been delayed, causing frustration among residents.
Members of Parliament raised the issue, highlighting the impact on grassroots governance. The government's commitment comes as a relief to many who have been affected by the disruption.
What This Means
The pledge to end the shortage by November is expected to restore normal operations at the village level. LC chairpersons play a vital role in local governance, and the availability of stamps will enable them to carry out their duties effectively.
The government's assurance will be closely watched to ensure timely delivery of the stamps and uninterrupted services for citizens.
