England manager Thomas Tuchel has left Chelsea forward Cole Palmer out of his squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain, citing the player's failure to take his chances. Tuchel's comments came during the squad announcement on Thursday, where he also handed first-time call-ups to Fulham's Josh King and Borussia Dortmund's Jobe Bellingham.
Tuchel's Reasoning
Palmer, 24, was omitted from England's early autumn squad and will again watch from home as the Three Lions face Croatia at Wembley on 12 November and Spain in Madrid on 15 November. Tuchel explained that the door remains open but emphasized the need for consistency. "We have enough number 10s and we stick to the guys who were in the previous camp because we were happy with the two and a half weeks we had together," Tuchel said. "I guess everyone is desperate to play for England and Cole is no exception. We are speaking now about a player that is not in camp. It counts when you are in camp and I just said last time that he misses too many opportunities to impress."
The German coach also highlighted the versatility of new call-up Josh King, saying, "We have Josh King as a new player in there, but I want to see him on both wings. He is kind of an extra player and he can play all four positions."
New Faces and Returning Stars
Jobe Bellingham, 21, joins his brother Jude in the squad, and the pair could become the first siblings to feature in an England line-up since Gary and Phil Neville. The squad also sees the return of Ben White and Djed Spence, while Declan Rice and Ezri Konsa are back after withdrawing from the last camp.
However, several key players miss out through injury. Arsenal's Bukayo Saka is sidelined for six weeks with a quadriceps injury sustained against Bayern Munich, and Bournemouth's Alex Scott is also absent. Manchester United's Marcus Rashford and Newcastle's Tino Livramento are out with hip and knee injuries respectively, while Trevoh Chalobah, Nico O'Reilly, and Rico Lewis have not been selected.
Tuchel's squad features a mix of experience and youth, with Harry Kane, Jordan Pickford, and Jude Bellingham providing leadership. The inclusions of King and Jobe Bellingham signal a willingness to experiment as England prepare for two tough fixtures.
The full squad is as follows:
- Goalkeepers: Jordan Pickford (Everton), Jason Steele (Brighton & Hove Albion), James Trafford (Leeds United)
- Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Real Madrid), Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Marc Guehi (Manchester City), Lewis Hall (Newcastle United), Ezri Konsa (Arsenal), Jarell Quansah (Bayer Leverkusen), Djed Spence (Inter Milan), Ben White (Arsenal)
- Midfielders: Elliot Anderson (Manchester City), Jobe Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), James Garner (Everton), Josh King (Fulham), Myles Lewis-Skelly (Arsenal), Declan Rice (Arsenal)
- Forwards: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds United), Eberechi Eze (Arsenal), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest), Anthony Gordon (Barcelona), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Rio Ngumoha (Liverpool), Morgan Rogers (Chelsea)
England will be looking to build on their recent performances as they take on Croatia and Spain. Tuchel's decisions will be under scrutiny, especially regarding the exclusion of Palmer, who has been in fine form for Chelsea. The manager's emphasis on players who are present and performing in camp suggests a meritocratic approach, but only time will tell if it yields results on the pitch.
