In a heartwarming turn of events, two police officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have been reunited with a newborn baby they helped deliver in the back of a car during a routine traffic operation. The officers, Constables Campbell and Lavery, first encountered the situation on October 9 in Ballymena, County Antrim, when a frantic father approached them as they were conducting checks on Raceview Road at 3:30 am.

A Surprise Encounter

Constable Campbell, who has served nearly two years with the PSNI, recounted the moment. "I think you maybe worry somebody has had a breakdown or somebody needs help, but certainly not that his wife is in labour," he said. The officers initially planned to transport the mother to the hospital, but the baby had other ideas. Constable Lavery, who joined the force in May 2025, added, "By the time we made it to the car, the dad told us the baby was coming. She had basically already delivered the baby in the back of the car. She had been absolutely amazing."

Quick Thinking in Challenging Conditions

The night was cold and rainy, and the location was described by Campbell as "a very exposed piece of road." Lavery, a father himself, was particularly concerned about the risks of a roadside birth. He repeatedly asked if the baby had cried, knowing it was a crucial sign of health. "We needed that baby to cry," he explained. "And then my colleague said the baby had cried, which was good news, but the worry moved on to mum." With limited resources, Lavery grabbed a high-visibility jacket from the police car to keep the mother and baby warm. Campbell praised the mother's composure: "There was absolutely no hesitation. She lifted the baby up and made sure the baby was okay."

A Emotional Reunion

This week, both officers had the chance to meet baby Benedyct for the second time. "It was great to go back and see that everybody was doing well," Campbell said. Lavery added, "He's just so small and dainty, and it was good to get a cuddle off him," though he admitted, "I hope it's not a situation I have to be in again." For Campbell, the experience is one he will never forget. "It's the one I'll always remember. It's not something that happens; a lot of people who have been in the police for years have never experienced it."

The story highlights the unpredictable nature of police work and the compassion and quick thinking of officers who go above and beyond their duties. The safe delivery of baby Benedyct is a testament to the mother's strength and the officers' calm response under pressure.
