In a dramatic and rain-soaked qualifying session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, McLaren's Lando Norris secured pole position after a nearly 90-minute delay caused by heavy rain at the Interlagos circuit. The session, which was originally scheduled to start at 3:00 PM local time, was red-flagged before any driver could set a lap due to dangerous conditions.

Norris Shines in Wet Conditions

When the session finally resumed, Norris demonstrated his mastery of the wet track, beating Mercedes' George Russell by a narrow margin of 0.204 seconds. The British driver, who has already won two races this season in Hungary and the Netherlands, repeated his pole-winning performance from Brazil last year. "It's been a long day, a great qualifying," Norris said. "It was about getting two laps in at the beginning and not making mistakes and that's what we did."

Russell, who was left frustrated by his team's decision to abort a potentially faster lap as the rain intensified, acknowledged Norris's pace: "Congrats to Lando. That was definitely the pole lap. The rain was coming and we should have just finished the lap. Felt more confident in the wet than we did in the dry." However, Russell's qualifying effort will be compromised by a five-place grid penalty for exceeding his engine parts allocation, promoting his teammate and newly crowned world champion Kimi Antonelli to second on the grid.

Grid Penalties Shuffle the Order

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc qualified fourth but will drop 10 places due to an engine penalty, elevating Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson to third. The wet conditions provided an opportunity for drivers in usually uncompetitive cars to shine, with several delivering their best qualifying performances of the year. Among them were Audi's Nico Hulkenberg (qualified sixth, starts fourth), Haas' Oliver Bearman (qualified eighth, starts sixth), Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso (qualified ninth, starts eighth), and Williams' Alex Albon (starts ninth).

Bearman described the conditions as "definitely the wettest I've experienced in a race car, if not any car, and that's saying a lot given I grew up in the UK."

Verstappen and Hamilton to Start from the Back

Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who was third fastest in the first session, did not participate in the second session knowing he would start from the back due to engine penalties. Similarly, Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who also faces a back-of-grid start, took part in Q2 but could only manage 11th.

The session's delay and subsequent wet running created a unique challenge for all teams, but it was Norris who ultimately thrived, securing his first pole since the Spanish Grand Prix in September. With the grid set and penalties applied, the Sao Paulo Grand Prix promises to be a thrilling contest as drivers navigate the unpredictable weather and the tight Interlagos circuit.
