England have been dealt a significant blow ahead of their Nations Championship campaign, with scrum-half Alex Mitchell ruled out of the entire series due to a hamstring injury. The Northampton pivot limped off during his club's Premiership clash with Gloucester last Saturday, and England have now confirmed he will play no part in the upcoming matches against Australia, Japan, and New Zealand this month.
A Recurring Setback
The news comes as a heavy frustration for the 29-year-old, who has now suffered his fourth hamstring injury of the year. Having already endured three separate setbacks through the course of 2026, Mitchell now faces an extended spell on the sidelines for both club and country. His withdrawal in the first half of Northampton's 28-14 victory over Gloucester had raised immediate concerns, and the confirmation of his absence will force England's coaching staff to reshuffle their plans.
Smith Progressing but Cautious
Meanwhile, fly-half Fin Smith took a limited part in training as he continues his recovery from a calf problem. The playmaker did participate in running drills upon arrival at the camp, and England sources remain optimistic about his chances of being fit for Sunday's showdown with the Wallabies. His involvement in meetings and tactical discussions has been noted by teammates, who believe his character and commitment remain undiminished despite the reduced training load.
Freeman Backs Teammate to Bounce Back
Tommy Freeman, Mitchell's teammate at both club and international level, described the news as "gutting" but expressed confidence in his colleague's resilience. "It will definitely give him time to go after his rehab and get to the bottom of what is going on, find new solutions and ways to maximise his recovery," the Saints wing said. "You don't want to see your mate and a player who is a massive part of this group out. He is going to be missed with his humour off the field and playing ability on it."
Freeman also offered an encouraging update on Smith, saying the fly-half is "pretty optimistic" about facing Australia and is compensating for his lighter training schedule by contributing strongly in team meetings.
Scrum-Half Options Thin
With Mitchell unavailable, England have called in Bath's Ben Spencer and Bristol Bears' Harry Randall as scrum-half options. Leicester's Jack van Poortvliet, who started all three of England's summer Tests, is the likely first-choice number nine. Northampton's 21-year-old Archie McParland was named in the initial training squad but has withdrawn with a calf injury, further narrowing the selection pool.
On a more positive note, hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie and flanker Tom Curry both took part in modified training on Tuesday at England's Bagshot base and are expected to be available for selection. England boss Steve Borthwick will name his side to face Australia on Friday, with the squad's depth set to be tested as the Nations Championship gets underway.
