Speke Resort Munyonyo came alive on Sunday, November 1, 2026, as the Indian and Ugandan communities gathered to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, in a vibrant display of culture, cuisine, music and tradition.

The event drew people from diverse cultural backgrounds for an evening of entertainment and cultural exchange, underscoring the deepening friendship and long-standing ties between Uganda and India.

A Festival of Deep Meaning

Diwali ranks among the most significant festivals in Hindu culture, representing the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Traditionally, the occasion is marked by prayers, family gatherings, shared meals, gift exchanges and the welcoming of prosperity and new beginnings.

This year's celebrations were held under the theme "Vivid Culture, United Together for a Bright Future", drawing several prominent Ugandan and Indian figures. Among those in attendance were Vice-President Jessica Alupo, Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs Minister Minsa Kabanda, Indian Association in Uganda chairman Paresh Mehta and Hon. Sanjay Tanna, along with members of the diplomatic community and other invited guests.

Food as a Bridge Between Cultures

Cuisine emerged as one of the evening's biggest draws, with more than 100 stalls offering guests a taste of India's rich culinary heritage. From butter chicken and biryani to naan, roti, samosas, snacks and traditional sweets, the spread took visitors on a flavourful journey through India's diverse food culture.

Beyond the tastes, the food carried deeper meaning, reflecting one of Diwali's central traditions: sharing and welcoming others. Guests mingled as they sampled different dishes, turning the occasion into a celebration of friendship as much as culture.

Fireworks Light Up the Sky

At 8:20pm, the festivities reached a spectacular peak as fireworks illuminated the sky above Speke Resort. The dazzling display symbolised the triumph of light over darkness and commemorated the return of Lord Rama from exile, a story closely associated with Diwali.

The entertainment programme added colour and energy to the evening, with cultural performances, traditional dances and music giving guests a glimpse into India's vibrant artistic heritage.

One of the night's standout moments came when Indian Idol star and backup singer Abhishek Kumar took to the stage. His electrifying performance drew cheers from the audience and kept the excitement alive, giving revellers yet another reason to celebrate.

The full-house event served as a reminder of the strong bonds between Uganda and India, with culture, food and music bringing communities together under one roof.
