Nottingham Forest secured their first home goals of the season in spectacular fashion, defeating Manchester City and handing the champions their third consecutive Premier League defeat. The hero of the afternoon was Liam Delap, the former City striker who struck twice with thunderous finishes to bring the City Ground to life.
A Dream Start for Forest
Forest wasted little time in asserting themselves. In just the sixth minute, centre-back Jair Cunha found himself in an attacking position and pounced on a loose ball before coolly rolling it into the net. The early breakthrough set the tone for a fearless home performance, and Cunha later produced a brilliant goal-line clearance at the other end to protect the lead.
Nikola Milenkovic stood tall at the back, blocking a fierce Jeremy Doku strike early on in a moment that epitomised his commanding display. Alongside him, Murillo delivered a solid shift, tasked with keeping Erling Haaland quiet, and largely succeeded. Daniel Munoz, meanwhile, looked pumped from the first whistle and did superbly to nullify the dangerous Doku, earning plaudits for his defensive discipline.
City's Defensive Woes Exposed
Manchester City's back line endured a torrid afternoon. Ruben Dias produced a desperate lunge in a vain attempt to block Delap's goal, a moment that summed up both his and his side's struggles. Marc Guehi was part of a defence that looked all over the place in the first half and was hooked at half-time. Josko Gvardiol, too, endured a difficult outing, soft on the ball early on when Cunha dispossessed him for Forest's opener, and he was also substituted.
In goal, Gianluigi Donnarumma endured another game without a clean sheet, conceding three, and looked suspect in the air. It has been a difficult season for the Italian keeper.
Midfield Battle Lost
Elliot Anderson made an unhappy return to the City Ground, where he lost the midfield battle. Enzo Fernandez delivered a really disappointing performance, sending a close-range header over the bar when he should have pulled a goal back. The City midfield appeared to lack balance with both Anderson and Fernandez in the side.
Iliman Ndiaye's missed interception led to Forest's second goal, and he contributed little in attack. Rayan Cherki, however, offered a rare bright spot for the visitors, pulling a goal back with a stunning finish in the second half, though it proved no more than a consolation.
Delap the Difference
Liam Delap was the undeniable difference-maker. The no-nonsense striker, facing his former club, delivered two thunderous finishes that ignited the stadium and secured a memorable victory. James McAtee, another former City player, also had a very good game and could have capped it with a goal, only to see a weak shot saved before blazing another over.
Ryan Yates, the Forest captain, had a mixed afternoon. His poor clearance allowed Cherki to score, but his overall contribution helped drive the team forward. Xaver Schlager provided the assist for the second goal in a decent showing, while Morgan Gibbs-White was hard-working and caused City problems in the final third.
For City, Matheus Nunes, introduced at half-time, failed to put a foot in on Delap for Forest's third goal. Nico O'Reilly, also brought on at the break, may now be given a run of games given Gvardiol's shaky form.
The result leaves Manchester City with serious questions to answer, while Nottingham Forest can savour a famous victory built on grit, organisation, and the clinical brilliance of Liam Delap.
