Baxters, one of Scotland's most recognized food producers, has issued an urgent recall of its Chef Selections Cullen Skink soup after a manufacturing defect raised concerns that the cans could swell and potentially rupture. The recall, announced in coordination with the Food Standards Agency (FSA), applies to 400g cans carrying the batch code L07XC and a best before date of April 2029.
The Fochabers-based company warned that the fault could cause the smoked haddock chowder to spoil, producing an unpleasant odour and flavour. More seriously, the FSA cautioned that affected tins may swell and burst, posing a safety risk to anyone handling them.
What Shoppers Should Do
Customers across England, Wales and Scotland who purchased the product are being advised not to eat the soup under any circumstances. Instead, the FSA has instructed consumers to avoid opening the cans and to dispose of them safely.
- Do not open the can.
- Place the full, unopened can inside a bag.
- Dispose of it in an external bin.
Anyone seeking a replacement has been directed to contact the Baxters customer care team by email at ccuk@baxters.com.
A Storied Scottish Brand
Founded in the Moray village of Fochabers in 1868, Baxters has grown into one of Scotland's best-known food manufacturers. The company remains a privately owned family business and is currently led by fourth-generation family member Audrey Baxter.
The recall highlights the importance of vigilance in food manufacturing, even for established brands with long histories. Consumers are encouraged to check their cupboards for the affected batch and to follow the FSA's guidance promptly.
